Your Health and your Money

One book has asked this question, ‘what will it profit a man to gain the whole world and yet loose his own soul?’ I might ask, ‘what will it benefit you to gain so much wealth and not have the health to enjoy it?’

Am deeply moved by the rate at which people’s health is failing these days age not withstanding.

Reading I came across this comment, ‘As many as half of cancer deaths could be prevented if more people made lifestyle changes such as avoiding smoking and excessive sun exposure, eating nutritiously and getting regular exercise and recommended health screenings…’

Its takes falling ill to appreciate ones health, that you can actually loose control of everything and be at risk of actually loosing your life. When you are sick it costs money to recover but what’s even worse maybe the ability to enjoy what you have worked so hard to achieve. We need to be healthy to be able to make the money but also to enjoy it.

Below are some tips that could help improve our health, giving us better chances of enjoying our wealth.

  • Eat Right; one of the easier ways to eat right is to eat food in its most natural state or nearest to the state in which God made it. The more refined and far away it is from its natural state, the more unhealthy.
  • Water; This can not be over emphasized, it hydrates, cleanses/detoxifies and empowers us. The easiest way is to place the bottle/jar of water near you so you keep sipping at it through out the day as opposed to trying to push down 2-4 litres of water all at one go.
  • Exercise; a lot has been said about exercise although not every body does it. Keep physically busy making use of simple techniques like walking, running up the steps instead of using the lift, park far off from your work place and walk to your office…
  • Fasting; Different religions encourage their followers to fast regularly…not only does it enrich you spiritually, it allows you body time rest and restore itself, but its very pocket friendly too!
  • Spend time outdoors to enjoy the fresh air as opposed to the air conditioner and the fan, bask in the sunshine, the Vitamin D is invaluable.
  • Take the time to love, laugh and play with those around you. A lot has been said on the scientific effects of enhancing these positive emotions in our lives.
  • Take the time off to rest……a day of rest each week, to unwind and relax, at least 6-8 hours of sleep each night?
  • Above all, live a life of balance……..over or under doing any of these steps will be counter productive. We all have one life; we have to live it to the full. Good luck!

  1. In the Uganda news recently is the information about some privatized companies that were required to list their shares on the Uganda Securities exchange within specified time frames that have mostly expired. Given that one of the criticism received from potential big investors is that our markets are shallow with few stocks, and that therefore prices are very susceptible to shocks. One would think that these investors would be willing to list on the USE without hassle so as to develop with our markets. USE listing requirements are most easily fulfilled by multinationals since they are usually listed elsewhere and often on several exchanges. Government is irked by the failure ( or slowness) to implement the agreements. I am convinced that stock exchange investments are another tool that ought to be used to implement the 'bonna bagagwale' . Any one who can achieve the minimum investment can participate in the IPO process. To me it is more important for Ugandans to see the dynamics of stock investing. This will pave the way for formal savings growth and on a nationwide scale, this is probably the best thing to celebrate this year so far.

Some one told me the other day "If I had things my way, all foreign owned companies would be required to list as soon as the tax holidays expired or as soon as they start making profit." His point was that since these companies make profit out of the relatively lavish expenditure habits of some Ugandans, they should be able to share profits with those other Ugandans who also want to multiply their money.
